I'm at level 8:
* grow the pumpkin
* make the crust using lard rendered from pig fat from the pigs you raised, slaughtered, and butchered yourself
* use eggs from own chickens
room for improvement:
* milk from own cow
* flour from own wheat

I suspect it's not the price of the cow, it's the layout for support infrastructure that's the killer. Also, the time-suck.

a cow milking session is 20 minutes, by hand. Maybe there's a machine we can buy scaled for a small farm. So: 10 hours of researching that, buying it, etc...and then a mere TEN minutes of milking the cow, every day. Plus...store it where? In fridge? not enough room. Buy new?

So say we have a new fridge...then we add milk at 1-5 gal/day (from a single cow). What to do? Sell? Where? Weekly cheese making session? Possible. That's another 2 hours per week. and on and on and on we already chew 30-60 min per day plus most of Sunday w farm stuff

not to mention $5-10k/yr on farmhand labor, plus maybe $100k over the last 5 years on building infrastructure. Also: where does the cow live? Barn? All stalls already in use. Also: what is our pasture management strategy? We have some cross fencing, but need to rotate weekly

also: what's the carrying capacity of our two 1.5 acre fields? Up to 15 sheep on each, rotating between them. We have ~15 sheep. Where does cow go? Do we add it to the herd? If so, then faster rotation. Need a third field fenced. Which one? What cost? What labor? This stuff >

has costs: * labor cost (farm hands) * direct cost (cow) * infrastructure cost (milking machine, new fridge) * time cost (every day milking, cheese making, etc)

If you don't mind the taste. I'd turn it all into cheese.
