All of these are plates from his Frankenstein book (hardcover, probably pretty pricey - i picked mine up at publication date from Travis, actually)
Bernie Wrightson held an inking demo to show techniques he used for FRANKENSTEIN, and artists flocked Wrightson got a very small brush, wetted it to make a very fine point, drew one small line and the artists realized: THAT WAS HOW WRIGHTSON HAD SPENT LARGE CHUNKS OF THE 70S
hey hey hey @hradzka - no jumping in other people's threads!!!
:P
but joking aside: there's a short machinist story called "the bullseye mixture" (yes. There are machinist stories. It is a VERY VERY SMALL GENRE.)
upshot to the story is that the master is out sick, and the apprentice, who's watched the master, tries to fulfill an order. Master machinist always talked about "the bullseye mixture", but apprentice can't find any such lubricant or abrasive in the shop. >>>
so he's got this gunsmithing order to fill, and can't find the special sauce, so he just goes slowly. Does every step of the process insanely meticulously. Doesn't just hand file - CLEANS THE FILES FIRST. Doesn't just measure - CALIBRATES THE DIAL INDICATOR FIRST. etc. >>>
apprentice hands off gun to customer. master machinist returns from sick leave. "I'm so sorry, I couldn't find the bullseye mixture". And - OF COURSE - the secret is that insane anal retentiveness and doing even the unimportant stuff perfectly WAS the bullseye mixture. >>>
so named bc a gun made that way hits the bullseye every time. c.f. the inking technique described above
