I reread the wikipedia page every year or so and it seems like solid future fantasy wrapped in terrible animation

kirby & toth did concept work, gerber and evanier wrote - they were all really talented people - but the quality of american animation at the time was incredibly poor. not entirely sure why

economics, I'm sure I don't know the exact details (federal regulations? lack of competition bc 3 channels? other?), but I'd wage $50 on that being the answer.

relatedly, i think these stylistic choices train our mainstream animators to make ugly crap for undiscriminating consumers, while the really talented people go into video game development where quality seems to be a much higher priority

I always thought Michael Whelan was the best at fiction/fantasy cover art and then his own private work...such an appreciation for the human form. I cannot bear comics, never did understand their attraction but then I was an Archie era reader so... https://www.michaelwhelan.com/

I love Whelan. Have two signed artists proofs from him (he paints a pix, photographer takes a few shots w different f-stops, etc., submits them to him, he picks one as "definitive", then signs and sells the 4 or 5 prints).

I have an early in his career print (giclee?) of...Cherryh's Exile's Gate - a prized item. Which prints did you choose?? So many...but the Cherryh series is a favorite. BTW, the audio book narrator of the series did a bad job of it. Unlike yours. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51QaV8PxpHL.jpg …

I always liked the leg positioning in that (Niven) one - for his "Job" piece he noted he had to get a friend to hand from a tree and quickly sketch the feet in that downward position. Seems as though he carried that through here. But great choices...
