From what? The rancher likes feeding his cattle for free, has no incentive to keep them out of the alfalfa.

My vote would be to split the costs. Each side has something that can benefit the other so it is in their best interest to not engage in a pissing contest. Manure means stronger plants, excess plants leads to better fed animals, everyone wins. But then... I'm insane.
