Got a problem. Have a next door neighbor, who is the best guy EVER. ...but I think he's getting really bad information from the town planning board. I think the town is misreading their own zoning regs, and giving him permission to build an illegal structure.

I WANT this guy to build his steel barn / workshop. I really do. ...but I think the setback from my property line is 30', and the town is telling him that it's 15'. ...and I the regs just absolutely don't support that.

Expensive-ish option is to file for an injunction on the construction (once he starts) and let a Judge who ostensibly knows how to read make a ruling. Or file against the board if they're issuing a permit or something.

I'm going to send a registered letter to the town zoning board and to the town lawyer, alerting them that their building department is about to issue an illegal / incorrect permit that will cause them grief and damages later.

Is there any reason not to just warn the neighbour directly? Are you worried about your relationship with him but want his construction further from your property, or are you worried for him that it might come back on him later?

he and I are talking it out and are entirely the same page - want to get to the bottom of what the regs actually say
