Got a problem. Have a next door neighbor, who is the best guy EVER. ...but I think he's getting really bad information from the town planning board. I think the town is misreading their own zoning regs, and giving him permission to build an illegal structure.

Bingo. Don't even have to pay a lawyer for that although sometimes the attorney letterhead gives it extra OOMPH. They should take notice because this is the kind of thing that can cause upsets DECADES in the future.

Also, if they have been giving this advice out for a while now, it could cause some upset NOW if they suddenly realize they've been handing out erroneous permits all this time!

Is there any reason not to just warn the neighbour directly? Are you worried about your relationship with him but want his construction further from your property, or are you worried for him that it might come back on him later?
-
he and I are talking it out and are entirely the same page - want to get to the bottom of what the regs actually say
