Wife is grimacing and grumbling at how hard it is to carry grape juice up and down stairs, pour things in and out of fermenter, etc. Did some research. This is DEFINITELY a "throw money at it" kind of problem.

I absolutely love fabricating stuff myself, cobbling it together, etc. However: * we're at the point in life where the mortgage is paid off and we're doing OK * ease of storage, ease of cleanup, and just enjoying high quality stuff is very important

Yes, typically. But "orange wines" (i.e., skin-fermented whites) are really cool and fun wines. Would not recommend that beginners attempt that style!
