4/ There are TWO things that are required to go to the moon: (a) radial velocity ("outward"), (b) tangential velocity ("forward"). Apollo accomplished both with a burn of the third stage ("trans lunar injection").

5/ In my novels these are accomplished using different technologies. Radial is via AG drive. Tangential is via chemical rockets.
