Basically, Vinge got old, and - IMO - it's rare that an SF author > 70 can still write compelling stuff the way he did earlier. e.g. Niven hasn't written anything great (or even good?) since 1990 :(

I figure maximal irony will be achieved if I retire at 67, am diagnosed with something terrible later that day, and someone else buys my tools at the estate sale and then gets to have fun with them. But perhaps I am letting too much of the "real me" show in this thread?
