Oooh. Fastball right over the plate. "The wicked flee when no man pursueth."https://twitter.com/RyanLizza/status/1036229914855436288 …
mmm I don't want to defend Trump, bc, yes, he is wicked. ...but when someone gives a speech at a funeral that says "there is no need to Make America Great Again" (his campaign slogan), it's not a great leap to read that as an attack.

Absolutely true. But once upon a time there was a norm of not putting a name to the attack, of allowing the polite fiction that who it was about wasn't clear. Had to do with the old ethic of "it's not personal" and "attack the idea, not the person."

Also, while I'm thinking of it, it's probably important to remember that MAGA itself is hard to see as anything but an attack on our country -- an assertion that it is not great/has stopped being great, compared to whatever weird blanched Neverneverland he thinks once existed.

I think how Trump's reaction is revealing : people are proud of their country (using McCain as examplar, oh well, the idealized McCain can be a symbol of the idealized America I guess), therefore resisting Trump's attacks, and that flips him into Big Baby mode.
