Didn’t like the character of Thomas Covenant, but the theme and premise hooked me anyway. But I’ve never been a big fan of likeable characters. Give me interesting over likeable every time.

Interesting is - definitional - memorable. Likeable is not. I'll remember the character in Candle throwing gold coins in the spaceport and killing someone in a bathroom for a flight off Earth, or the hammer-on-fingers torturer in Directive 51 forever.
