I built wooden frame shelves for barn, but welded up some overhead storage (for steel). Intend to weld up frames for shelves in new garden shed tho.

4' length? Sticking out into room? that's...really extreme. My standard shelf is 2' deep. I use diagonal braces about 4" in. (a) I wouldn't do 4' at all, no matter what (b) if I did, I'd do MASSIVE diagonal. Connect out at least 2' from wall.
