I built wooden frame shelves for barn, but welded up some overhead storage (for steel). Intend to weld up frames for shelves in new garden shed tho.

1" is absolutely unacceptable. Even with solid barstock and expert welder. 48:1 lever ratio is insane. Also, re wall thickeness: I dunno, whatever "standard" is. :)

4' deep is way too deep for a shelf - just an invitation to lose stuff back there 4' deep is also way to deep for rods sticking out that you hang stuff on 2', I'm telling you
