For some reason, this reminds me of a (possibly apocryphal) story about Ghurkas from WW II. They were told by the British commander that they could volunteer for a dangerous mission, which he went on to describe to them...https://twitter.com/JSinghSohal/status/1023910356949917696 …

Sikhs who join @BritishArmy @DefenceHQ today know about the Indian historic contribution during WW1, WW2 and the frontier ... but it was early pioneers such as Sgt Baldev Singh who ensured we are today able to serve with dignity and pride in our dentity and shared values! https://twitter.com/JSinghSohal/status/1023909721303146496 …

They were to load up with weaponry and ammo, climb into an airplane, jump out of it from altitude, and take a garrison. When he asked for volunteers, only about half of them stepped forward. He was surprised, given their reputation for fearlessness.

He went over to their commander, and inquired what the issue was. So the commander spoke to them in Nepali. After the discussion, he came back. "They were confused. They didn't realize that they'd be given parachutes."

You read that in The Gurkhas, by Byron Farwell, I bet. ...because that's where I read it. https://www.amazon.com/Gurkhas-Byron-Farwell/dp/039330714X …

The version I remember is "you'll be jumping out at 500 feet" one gurkha asked "couldn't we jump from lower?" "no, the parachutes wouldn't open any lower" "OH! We'll be using parachutes?!"

For anyone who thinks this is a knock on gurkhas' intelligence and not an ode to how bad-ass they are, 500 feet is CRAZY low for a parachute. I think 800 feet is normally the minimum to ensure they open? Gurkhas: "Oh, we're doing it the easy way; cool."
