Flywheels? That's what they are using to store solar energy know, and of course in some cars.

I saw something on Nova where some magnetically levitated very heavy finely machined flywheels were spinning at scary rates and able to store a surprisingly large amount of energy. Probably not commercially viable yet.

Unless graphene offers some new technology for batteries, I just don't see them being practical over their life cycle. Storing energy mechanically seems to be a much better solution... for now.
