I think insight is the focus of a Certain Tiny Internet Community and perhaps one gets tired of it eventually. In the wider civilizational context, we're drowning in information (but people don't bother to look) and starved for insight (though there's a glut of TEDshit).

I find myself skipping over even my Great Teachers more and more lately, but I think that's just anhedonia.

One genuinely brilliant work usually fixes it for me. Most people's insight is overrated, but certain people's insight is perpetually underrated.

My take is that: 1) there are Great Insights out there, but there is a huge market (in our tiny phyle) for insights, so many attempts are produced. Hit rate is low, but mimicry is good. 2) as in startups, execution >>>> ideas. Of what value is a Great Insight on its own?

2/ I'm not sure what execution even MEANS for a Great Insight. ...but flailing around: A Pattern Language is good. ...but largely to the degree that it either produces great buildings, or inspires other G.I.s that produce SOMETHING IRL. Theory w/o IRL applications = weak.

3/ ...and that's not just bc I like tangible things. It's bc IRL is the acid test. Without a filter, then all we're doing is producing sequences of symbols that tickle the "ooh!" reaction.

There's no easy way to trace IRL back to theory. It's not some straight line from "insight!" to application. For any apparently great application, you can trace the same insight to mountains more of garbage.

but if you can't trace a single insight from a theory, that's a difference case
