2/ response is either good ("we've never lost a candidate we wanted over salary" / "we consider ourselves to be quite competitive") mediocre ("the salary varies based on experience") or bad part of the trick is doing the dance the right way. which, again, is good screening

3/ the other thing is that there is not A salary. candidate X and Y and Z each get a different offer, based on how they do in the interview. Asking ahead of time is like asking a sales guy "how much is A car?" answer: "well...which one?"

4/ The correct approach is to walk in, ace the interview, and walk out, having never once asked about salary. Now: (a) THEY want YOU (b) they know you're good (c) they scratch their heads thinking "how much do we have to offer to get him?"
