3/ the other thing is that there is not A salary. candidate X and Y and Z each get a different offer, based on how they do in the interview. Asking ahead of time is like asking a sales guy "how much is A car?" answer: "well...which one?"

4/ The correct approach is to walk in, ace the interview, and walk out, having never once asked about salary. Now: (a) THEY want YOU (b) they know you're good (c) they scratch their heads thinking "how much do we have to offer to get him?"
