I'll extend a third somewhat distinct option: Women miss the more comprehensible social environment of high school & relative simplicity of teen life, and so enjoy reliving it. Arguably similar to why adolescent coming-of-age stories and teen sex comedies are popular with guys.

I dunno if that is *better* than your options. But I'd argue that women do prefer a world where you can easily sort people into boxes of "Nerd, Jock, Goth, Band Geek, etc.," align with one such group, & navigate the social hierarchy accordingly. Gets way harder from then on out
