Amusingly, much of the argument between ancaps / nightwatchman statists vs progs is this:
ancap: "my folks don't need police, welfare, or schools"
prog: "well the people I want to invite in can't govern themselves, so we need ALL of that and more"

Nightwatchmen states work great in areas that culled all the murderers from their gene pool 500 years ago with frequent hangings.

Not really. Police response times in Detroit are atrocious. They basically can't rely on the police to do anything worthwhile. They've turned to private threat management groups. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HnPZ1yuoFIc …

I'm not about to stand up and say "slavery was good, actually," but destroying American experiment to prevent dissidents from leaving has had disastrous consequences.

The tractor would have killed slavery without killing 500,000 Americans on both sides.

Underscores the point: "Taxes are the price we pay for (other people) failing to be civilized." Social Trust and self-sufficiency reduce the number and severity of conflicts, meaning most of them can be resolved by a conversation or (at worst) a trusted third party intervention.
-
And the cruel irony for progs is that their efforts have undermined social trust at every turn and demolished institutions that maintained civility which is a huge reason why a large and militarized police force is suddenly 'necessary' and why the poor are policed so heavily.

This can be tested during cop funerals, when most places are effectively police-free. Here's an observation of what happened in Montreal during the 1969 police strike:https://fistfulofscience.wordpress.com/2010/08/23/why-steven-pinker-gave-up-on-anarchism/ …
