I told the story to a coworker once (software engineer who had been a carpenter for 20 yrs before going back to school) and he was outraged. "WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY" I said "meh, if the dude earns 30x what I do, then it's like $1 to him" carpenter/coder was having none of it

relative money cost of time/comfort has to vary by individual wealth, seems I've seen people carry through the "unconditional frugality" thing, and it works for them, but even for not-rich me there's a point where it's not worth the effort
