People aren't routinely asked to vote on building a road for cars, so why should they be asked to vote on building mobility infrastructure for bikes?
Just build it.
This Spanish city centre has been car-free for 20 years. 12k people have moved into the centre since the ban. The Mayor says vehicles don’t have more right to public space than people — & he’s been re-elected 4 times since banning cars. Pontevedra via
Elected officials who say they support active transportation but take votes that block/delay/remove protected or separated bike lanes that would complete a safe network of movement in their city don’t care about active transportation or your safety - they care about re-election.
Wanna see why cyclists are not the problem in Montreal? This is not a bike lane - just some lines on the road that drivers can decide what works for them when they feel like it. #mtl#velo
What would be more impactful, in terms of addressing climate change, than getting as many vehicles off the road as possible? This is a serious question. Thanks for your insight.
To ensure cars didn’t take back control of Paris streets as the pandemic was “ending,” (like they have in so many cities), Mayor @Anne_Hidalgo made sure that 60k parking spaces and many streets were permanently transformed to seating for restaurants, people places and bike-lanes.
The most important thing about this amazing Paris transformation is how fast it happened — how fast people on bikes “appeared” — once streets were transformed. You can’t write this off as “Paris was always this way,” because it wasn’t.
It took leadership.
Growing up in suburbs, we were forced to believe the ability to drive was our biggest freedom in life. I’m glad I later realized that the truest freedom is $0 in car payments, $0 in car insurance, $0 in gas, $0 in parking and the wind through my helmet holes.
If your city can afford to spend $400,000 to further study and delay already-approved bike infra that provides safety and meaningful choices to residents, then it has has the money to add 3-5 more blocks to the original project.
One of the MOST IMPORTANT THINGS your city could do to become more healthy, sustainable, livable, affordable, equitable, resilient, etc — forget about “balancing” transportation modes, & commit to PRIORITIZING walking/rolling, biking, public transit. HT
The Dutch invest €595 million annually on urban biking, resulting in €19 BILLION saved in public health care costs alone. That’s how smart govts do the math on investing in better mobility.
Let’s be clear — it wastes public money to NOT do it.

Don't be angry at the person riding on the sidewalk, direct your frustration to the city that has refused to provide safe routes. Let's attack the problem not the symptom.
1. Any city/govt that has considered licensing people on bikes has rejected it as too expensive & awful for public goals
2. People riding bikes instead of driving SAVE a LOT of public money
3. The real goal of many people proposing licensing is to reduce the # of people on bikes https://twitter.com/peterwalker99/status/1559640809435185152…
America now builds more 3-car garages than 1bdrm apartments.
Our nation has an average of 1,000 sqft of parking for each car vs. 800 sqft of housing per person.
At this time of year, I thank Christina (my lord) that I never have to make another school lunch or buy school supplies. And those f’ing forms, every f’ing year. That suffering is real. I feel you parents and send you strength. #backtoschoolbullshit#torture#parents
“The desire is to make the French Capital—not that long ago a city that was toxic for everyday cycling—into a ‘100% cyclable city.’ Paris is already in the process of removing more than 70% of its on-street car parking spaces.”-
Half of business owners on this Toronto street estimated that more than 25% of their customers arrived by car. In fact, it was 4%. And the % for those who walked or cycled? 72%. Retailers routinely overestimate the # of “car customers.” Via

If you want to drive short distances, the obstacles between you and your destination are: car payment, possible toll road, car insurance, driver’s license, and parking.
If you want to cycle, the only obstacle is the infrastructure. 🚲
The best piece of financial advice I've ever gotten was to sell my car and get a bicycle. I saved the $ from 8 yrs of car payments, insurance, gas, etc. to make a down payment on a condo in a transit-rich, walkable, bikable neighborhood.
