    Reach for the star! Giant kelp stalks are held upright by gas-filled bulbs called pneumatocysts, which buoy the kelp up toward the sun. Once they reach the surface, the fronds spread out into a thick canopy to slurp up the sun. 🌊🌿☀️

    While humpbacks and others species are common in Monterey Bay, their historic abundance was apparently a whale of a tale. Early European visitors described the area as teeming with so many whales that walking on the beach was obnoxious from all the smell of whale breath! 🐋🤢

    Humpback whales have been spouted breaching from the back deck today! It's a great time of year to get out on a whale watch if you can—and if that's not possible, there's a chance to see whales on our Monterey Bay cam!

    Fun Fact: No one is exactly sure how old many sea turtles can be—they seem to keep outlasting the people studying them! Based on some estimates of some sea turtles breeding for the first time around 30 years of age, they may easily live into their 100s! 👵🌊🐢
