Ok, was trying to stay off Twitter until Saturday but this question of children masking outdoors (in camps, etc.) keeps coming up. Let's discuss #outdoortransmission. Viral particles disperse quickly in the outside airhttps://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.10.03.20206110v6.full …

A study in Wuhan, China, which involved careful contact tracing, discovered that just one of 7,324 infection events investigated was linked to outdoor transmission (none of the outbreaks identified from outside transmission).https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/ina.12766 …

In a recent analysis of over 232,000 infections in Ireland, only one case of COVID-19 in every thousand was traced to outdoor transmission.https://www.irishtimes.com/news/ireland/irish-news/outdoor-transmission-accounts-for-0-1-of-state-s-covid-19-cases-1.4529036?_ga=2.24768063.440780849.1618007143-575568946.1618007143 …

And a scoping review from the University of Canterbury concluded that outdoor transmission was rare, citing the opportunity costs of not encouraging the public to congregate outdoors. So, you can separate the question of vaccination from masking outsidehttps://www.canterbury.ac.uk/science-engineering-and-social-sciences/spear/research-projects/rapid-scoping-review-COVID-19.aspx …

Here's data on Pfizer vax12-15 years: looked safe and efficacious. But trial small: 1131 got vax (1129 placebo). Same dose as adults (30 mcg). Likely every parent will decide; vax usually mandated when causes severe disease in kids; measles, mumps, diphtheria, rubella, pertussispic.twitter.com/e0HDz0Ohtm

Really interesting from a human developmental viewpoint. Many young children will follow rules in extremis, because that's where their brain is at. Important for compassionate authority and good rules here. Kids will do what we tell them. Adults need to control their own fears.pic.twitter.com/NFYY9MGz7I

I run a summer camp for 9-18 year olds. I am imagining the prospect of the 9-11 year olds masking outside while the 12-18 year olds and adult staff are not. 🤦‍♂️😳
