maybe it’s the perceived obligation to see lots of work and “be seen” by the industry as a young writer; the uncomfortable networking after a long fucking day; and just a staggering quality of work that is mediocre, underwhelming or lacking resonance for our troubled times.

did the pandemic break me or free me? Hard to say!

don’t get me wrong, I will never stop loving theatre but this break has showed me that there is something fundamentally flawed in how work is created, produced, and the expectations put onto artists in general who choose this life.

I guess you can call that “industry” but that feels wrong because it’s not just institutions, it’s *us*. It’s how we operate. It’s how we view one another. It’s how we view ourselves. All I know is that when theatre “returns”, I want something different.

The more I think about it, I realize my earlier use of the phrase "live theatre" = capital T "Theatre" in my mind. Somewhere along the way, the art itself became synonymous with the industry/business/field that holds us captive. That's the actual issue we need to discuss.

I miss my theater community (which includes you!) I don't miss being underpaid, overworked, under appreciated and used and abused by people who only value my artistry and not my humanity. So I'm with you!

I miss you, too, Reynaldo!! It *is* fun rehearsing a show or running into your theatre fam randomly at a performance and then catching up afterward. Everything else though? idk

Yes the time and money to go and see the things and be seen at the things was truly exhausting. The guilt if you didn’t have the time or money (or inclination) to see something. Do not miss that at all.
