Everything that exists does so because it was not destroyed. If it was not destroyed it was so because it was lucky, sentient (and thus self-preserving), or symbiotic.

Is the earth lucky? Probably. Is the earth sentient? Probably not. Is the earth symbiotic? It probably wasn't, but with the advancement of humanity, it is now.
