      15 = 8 - 1 + 8 20 = 27 - 8 + 1 22 = 8 - 1 + 8 - 1 + 8 45 = 64 - 27 + 1 - 1 + 8

      So, yes, you can cut a cube into 20, 22, 15, and 45 smaller cubes

      This assumes that cubes can be cut and then collected. Which may not be applicable.

      No, not necessarily. Depends on what cuts are eligible. I have a saw that cuts straight down, in the direction of the blade, not perpendicular to it. Assuming accurate measurements and a complete mastery of the device, one can cut a 2x2x2 cube from a 3x3x3 cube as a whole

      As I wrote it, Viral may be right in the case of the 45 cubes. I don't see a way to cut a 2x2x2 cube and 3x3x3 cube from a 4x4x4 cube without "gluing" 1x1x1 cubes together to form larger n^3 cubes.

      Exactly.. I just posted a solution for 15 and 20 cubes.

      You can do 22 without gluing. Cut into 8 cubes then cut two out of 8 into 8. You are left with 2*8+(8-2)=22 cubes.
