Right, I think we'd have a deficit even with perfectly free trade because: 1. There is a labor cost arbitrage still 2. The dollar is the world's reserve currency, which drives up our currency relative to others and makes importers relatively cheaper 3. Chinese people work hard!

I don't think so. Relative to its older population, China has a glut of people in their early 30s. USA, not so. There is excess labor capacity relative to consumption demand, so it is exported.
