I think there's a bit of a straw-manning here. Everyone I talked to in favour of gun control does not point to the gun ownership rates but rather background/psychological checks, licensing. 1

IF you have an effective way to filter out the idiots making up 1% of the population you will not affect gun ownership rates but you will affect gun related homicide rates. Even with a high rate of false negatives (falsely denying gun rights). 2
