I've spoken to two people who strongly advocate for making prisons much less "humane" in order to combat recidivism in the United States, a former Texan prison warden and an Indian taxi driver. Both emphasized that prison life can be simpler/easier better than the "real world."

According to the Indian taxi driver, people in India don't steal in India like they do in the U.S. because, when you're caught, people beat the living shit out of you, first the locals, then the cops. Not advocating this, but I am advocating that incentives matter, a lot.
