If you're KJU, there's no way you're giving up your nukes. It deters you from being invaded then hanged like Sadam, sodomized like Gaddafi. We can't take away KJU's because he'll potentially nuke S.K. or firebomb it. So that's out.
So, we sanction them. Wouldn't it be better if, in return for opening up, the way China has, we drop sanctions and allow them to trade and prosper? Do countries that trade with each other, creating mutual dependence, go to war? I don't really see anything working here...

I think opening up would be better in general. But countries which trade with each other sometimes do go to war. Empirically look at Europe between 1500 and 1945. Logically, dependence is a liability, one (perceived) way to control it is to invade.

I don't buy this whole trading reduces war argument. Trading intensifies relationships, good or bad. This counterargument scales btw: many murders are amongst family members/business partners.
