News media coverage shouldn't necessarily be in proportion to the number of deaths associated with a type of event. If that were the case, the news would just read off lists of people who died of cancer and heart disease.

Secondly, if we are just talking about homicide, news coverage goes something like this: Terrorism in USA = School shootings ... big drop off ... > drug related crime = terrorism outside USA etc.

Drug related crime happens in isolated neighborhoods and some suicide bomber blowing up a market in Kabul is a distant occurrence. These things just do not affect most people in the usa, particularly the ones with money that advertisers are seeking, therefore less coverage.
