This is true both in life and in chess. It's rare that chess has given me some knowledge that could be applied out of it, but here it is. In chess, you don't want to analyze any one line too deeply. It's much better to just look at 1 or 2 moves for many possible first moves.
When confronted with a decision or problem that has 5 options or possible solutions, it is a significantly better strategy to take 1 step in 5 directions than to take 5 steps in 1 direction.
