Austin, TX is a liberal paradise. You can talk the high-tax, compassionate talk, without walking the walk.

How common is for cities to have local income taxes? Is NY the norm or the exception? If it's usually decided on the state level one can point to Texas being a red state I guess.

Fairly uncommon I believe, but I would just google the answer to your question instead. AFAIK, NY is the exception in the population of towns cities, but not necessarily among big cities - Philadelphia has one I believe. I think it's decided locally, but collected by the state.

Thanks! It's quite complex, there can be taxes even on lower levels (school district) apparently. I guess that underlines your point, Austin or any other city could levy taxes if they really wanted to.

It might require a change to state law, but yeah...I'm sure, if they really wanted to, they could do that, or if Austinites were really serious about their views, they could leave Austin for a more liberal state.

Did they specifically talk about money and taxes? Maybe they are more socially than economically liberal? Off - it's still strange for me that the term "liberal" means more like social democrat in the USA. In Europe we use it for classical liberals.

The people with whom I spoke are both entrepreneurs so not representative of the big chunk of the population. They spoke about money and taxes. They are socially liberal, economically conservative. I agree that the terminology here sucks, probably everywhere though.

In China, our right is their left and their left is our right. Confusing as hell.
