In my neighborhood, real estate is through the roof so everyone converts their garage to a den/playroom/man cave. The streets are truly taken over by car storage and everyone just takes that for granted.

It has huge impacts on employers and commercial real estate too. Federal law allows my employer to give me $20/month as a "transportation benefit" for biking to work. Same law allows them to give/deduct $255/month for parking. What do think that subsidy winds up encouraging?pic.twitter.com/KZYSO41brq

Lest someone think my POV is anti-car, I'm just wondering aloud why parking can't just be governed my market forces so the real cost of parking is paid by people who really value it most. To end or limit the entitlement.

It's closer to that in NYC, for instance. People in Manhattan who rent/own an apartment understand that storing a car will cost them $400-700/month. This impacts the nature of the city in a good way.pic.twitter.com/Zd9y783KGM

Serious question. We don't give away cars. Why do we give away parking spaces?

Part of the fundamental reason a sprawling city like LA is perpetually clogged with cars is that people have a very reasonable expectation that a free parking space awaits them wherever they go. Billions are spent to make it work that way.

Imagine in a place like LA if most folks at least took Uber/Lyft/cab to shop. It would free up massive acreage for other use and lower costs of goods. Environmental benefits, too.pic.twitter.com/dTzyW7Wi8E

Maybe only speaking for myself here, but once you start thinking about how our society values automobile storage, it looks like a black hole that does way more harm than good. This has 1000% more impact on traffic problem than bike lanes.pic.twitter.com/ZiYok4uUHB

If you're thinking someone should write a book about this,
@DonaldShoup already has. In it, he wrote “Minimum parking requirements act like a fertility drug for cars.”pic.twitter.com/pzYsMMVeZt

Not exactly sure how to tie this up. But one thing is sure: Drivers who call bike advocates "entitled" are ignoring or inured to staggering subsidies they benefit from. And all this free parking has really fucked shit up.
