It seems sometimes that high politics is becoming more and more of a spectacle, all appearance, no substance. But i'm not sure that's a bad thing necessarily.

yes, but because of tech media/politics reaches a wider circle, it's now more global and more abstract. 50 y ago no internet, 200 y ago no widespread newspapers
