@TheBigYogurt is there an obvious way to pay small businesses using the internet in the USA i'm totally missing or do most ppl actually write paper checks and stand in line at the post office?

Most businesses in USA still use and prefer checks. The savvier ones will accept payment by paypal or online payment processor. ACH is also possible, but clunky.

Thanks! so weird, everywhere else people just do wire transfers. in Singapore it's almost instant and almost free w/ most banks.

Domestic wire = $20 in USA. Int'l $40 on average. The U.S. isn't a great country because we have good infrastructure and gov't. It's great because we have those things AND we're big.

(And isolated from other countries) You know European history better than I do, but that's really important.
