Today I and the 8 yo son of a friend played football (soccer) against my friend and my 8 yo son. It worked really well.

I saw it more as: more learning when you split the families. Maybe because humans pay more attention/learn more in unfamiliar situation.

I don't think it's about familiarity. People are more likely to be well-behaved in social situations, and thus play more cooperatively.
