The college I went to now costs $78,000/yr.
Just checked, for 2020-2021:
13 professors of Theatre
13 professors of Sociology
5 professors of Art History
5 professors of French Studies
3 professors of Biblical Languages
...
2 professors of Computer Science

On a related note, I suspect that some less complex disciplines are undergoing Dellanna’s complexity disease. (Less relevant fields have to artificially increase complexity to catch up in “signaling sophistication” with complex & relevant degrees such as CS or medicine.)

Cool concept. Physics envy but for the liberal arts instead of economics. “A mark fo a charlatan is unnecessary complexity”

I know you’re asking half in jest, but to take the question at face value, costs have increased due to the rise of the administrative class (like in healthcare) and the evolution of universities as places of learning and socialization to basically all-inclusive 5-star resorts.

Compounding this is a huge influx of international applicants willing to pay full-tuition (plus bribes) to get in. It’s a vicious feedback loop.

Comp Sci profs are often really terrible too. The only good ones I had were the two guys who had worked in industry for twenty years and retired to Hannover.

I think there is always a need for technical professionals in education but may not make sense for most given the work to financial compensation. Most of them that end up teaching do so for the intrinsic rewards.
