True/False: Every successful person develops an ability to manage their own thinking. For example, they feel anxiety coming on and then use techniques to control their response to it. I tend to think this is true.

The Buddhists talk about the mind having a part that is the “monkey mind.” It’s the uncontrollable part of your consciousness that you should try to tame.

I spent a lot of time working through buddhist philosophy (mostly by way of Naval) and it didn't work for me. I had much more success with the western equivalent. Will get around to posting more about this soon.

Did you dig into Zen Buddhism? (I think Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind — the book — was good for me.)

I didn't. I felt like I was mostly in Indian Buddhism. I didn't try Eastern at all, but would be willing to give that a shot. Thanks for the book rec. I'm checking it out now.

Comment mostly about the true gurus aren’t fame-seeking — given they’re more focused on truly helping others, they realize the fame and sometimes being known as a guru is actually counter to that mission.

It can run counter, but it can be helpful too. Fame is great distribution for your philosophies. Buffett is a pretty good example of that. AFAICT he leverages his position as the world's greatest investor to teach people about life.

“Sir, this is a twitter. Nuance is not allowed.” :-) (But yes, I agree with you. Though I’d add that Buffett is nowhere in the top few people I’d consider great ‘gurus’ for me.)
