I am no legal expert. All I can say is, "one nation two systems" means HK cannot become a base to overthrow PRC. The word "Nation" is placed before "systems". Today I saw so mauch cheering from mainland Chinese and Hkers alike for NSL.

This law contradicts "one nation two systems". The idea that HK could overthrow PRC is ridiculous. Not even the United States could do it. A tiny island of a few million? Absurd. Who is cheering for what is not relevant.

Of course it is relevant. Thus is what Beijing had to deal with "the anger from mainland Chinese towards HK riots". NSL is the answer to useless HK Government. You think Beijing does not care opinion from the Chinese and care how western countries think?

Maybe this is western thinking, but to me: A deal is a deal. China made a deal with the British. They broke the deal. Period. There were other ways to solve the riots, as I already said.

Agree. But in politics, a deal is never binding. USA withdrew from Paris treaty, missile treaty, WHO, international Court for war crime. Yes different but President Bush pledged once "read my lips, no new tax".

"Two wrongs don't make a right." Yes, the USA has broken many deals and should be condemned for that, but that doesn't change the need to condemn what the PRC is doing now. They broke the contract, AFAICT.

Here is my true feeling. PRC does not give a shit what the treaty says, because they feel that the British fucked them with opium and then fucked them again by stealing Hong Kong. There's great truth to that of course. That's the truth isn't it?

3. The price of NSL is steep but remember from CCP perspective, the threat of HK being on the side of western powers in the cold War cannot be allowed. Imagine PR becomes ally of Russia?

If pr became an ally of Russia that would be absolutely zero problem for the United States. The idea that that would be a threat like Hong Kong could overthrow the PRC is laughable. Why didn’t HK overthrow the PRC before ‘97?

I should have said "the perceived threat". HK is a magnet for ppl who hated CCP and they really thrived there. Trust me they caused plenty of damage before. Most of manufactured political stories were made in HK
For BJ, the first loose brick would start the big problem1 reply 0 retweets 1 like
Yeah that’s true. There is anti PRC press in hk but it has no distribution in China. It is not a threat.

In HK Airport those manufactured "political scandal books" are hot sellers for mainland Chinese in transit
. Anyway if we view the whole HK drama in the context of sino-USA cold War, it's easier to see it thru.0 replies 0 retweets 1 likeThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
