I think they also have a rep of funding only youngin's in their program. That's limiting.
Does YC’s brand hurt it? I think you attract better on average founders when your brand is less prestiged and more counter-culture. Also, YC invested in Stripe but the Collisons did not do the YC curriculum. I suspect this is true for many of their more famous investments.
