Sometimes I wonder what the percentage likelihood is that my kids will walk on another planet someday. I’m increasingly confident it’s not zero.

For a lot of people to go to Mars, rather than just mission-sized groups, there would have to be not just technology for getting there, but a reason for them to go there. And while the technology might get good enough, I don't see where the reason comes from.

Building an underwater city on this planet is 100x easier than building a city on Mars. Nobody expects a lot of people to move to an underwater city, even in 100 years.

Yeah but building an underwater city is mostly only useful insofar as it can serve as a test run for building a city on other planets. For humans to survive they must explore the cosmos, not the oceans.
