One reliable way to lose my respect is to change the subject when I make a point you can’t rebut. Most people are clueless enough that they do this unconsciously. But if your response contains enough sophistry that it seems you did it on purpose, it will be much worse for you.
I'm not as good as you are at math, but I am not terrible. It's important to remember that other people don't have mathematics training and as such they don't have a good foundation on which to think logically. Their variables are constantly changing their values..

Yes. But I can tell the difference between merely being illogical, and sophistry. The latter implies an awareness of a need to use invalid arguments, and a willingness to do so. Due to my training, I’m a person against whom such tactics are particularly unlikely to succeed.
