Chess960 very narrowly reduces the utility of opening preparation (or maybe makes it much more onerous, because it doesn't really increase the number of opening positions enough) but it results in what I find ugly/unnatural positions

There are plenty of interesting positions which can be reached just a few moves out from the starting Chess position. No need to go with things which are so weird.
