It's a self enforcing myth. I thought I was lactose intolerance when I arrived at US. And it appeared so for the first semester or so. Then it just started going away when I drank more milk and ate more cheese. It happened to many I know.

Yeah, that's due to a genetic deficiency of the ALDH2 liver enzyme that helps with metabolizing alcohol. Really varies by person to person, but seems concentrated amongst southerners. Northern Chinese, Sichuanese, and Koreans can all drink pretty heavily from personal anecdata.
