Also the cultural emphasis on education, and specifically standardized exams. In ancient times, civil exams was one of the few pure meritocratic paths for upwards social mobility.

I don't think it's true, either. And I base this from first hand experience helping w/ test prep across races/background. Asians may do better, but that's more due to cultural awareness and emphasis on testing. In Chinese culture this traces all the way back to the keju (科举).
