Nobody wants to say what it really is: Northern Asians are innately smarter.
I don't know if that's true, but they FOR SURE do a lot better on these tests than they should and they certainly seem to work a lot harder at it. Cram schools work, baby.

They work harder at it too, which is part of the gap.

Also the cultural emphasis on education, and specifically standardized exams. In ancient times, civil exams was one of the few pure meritocratic paths for upwards social mobility.

I don't think it's true, either. And I base this from first hand experience helping w/ test prep across races/background. Asians may do better, but that's more due to cultural awareness and emphasis on testing. In Chinese culture this traces all the way back to the keju (科举).
