I think the argument is that GMO (editing DNA of crops to create things impossible) is a different thing that human-induced natural selection through breeding programs. Emotionally, the latter certainly feels safer -- nobody seems to have gotten cancer that way to illustrate.
Also, I don't think this is even GMO. Bananas and watermelons got to be the way they are through selective breeding, not genetic modifications.
