Different people learn in different ways. I would've worked much harder in school if they had posted the exam scores publicly (can't do that today, because "feelings"). I still remember the Japanese kid who wrecked me at those damned mad minutes.

Our reward was being exempt from them the rest of the period. Periods were start of year - Xmas break, New Years through spring break, SB - end of school year. It was good motivation to a lazy student like me!

My mom made me do a something similar at home. Exact opposite effect. Hated it because it was pointless extra homework.

There's no substituting for pure volume of repetition. I think we've lost some of that bloodymindedness. I remember going to the Pine Tree bball camp and Dick Whitmore and Dick Meader telling us we needed to shoot 1000 jumpshots a day while we were there
