My team is thinking about mandating vacation (not sure what we’d actually require). Our best engineers haven’t taken any time off all year. It seems weird to force it, but a three day weekend can really be refreshing. Taking care of yourself also makes you more productive.
I haven’t taken a vacation in 10 years and play with a lot of chips on the table and with some sharks. Gotta say, the idea that people need to recharge from a job is hard for me to relate to. I like weekends but go nuts on them. Always have to be doing something.

It depends on personalities for sure. In consulting, we would work 70-80 hour weeks a lot (rarely 100), but projects were only 8-12 weeks, so you got an opportunity to breathe. I don’t know that vacation is the answer, but you can only sprint for so long.

There’s also the blurred boundaries of perpetual WFH that makes things difficult. I imagine owning your own business would be similar even if you had an office to go to. That may be the bigger issue with decreased productivity / burn out. You’re always working so never refreshed
